Meet Mable

When we get a plea to help a partially paralyzed dog that was confiscated from a not so good situation and found herself in the shelter, you guys already KNOW that we had to go meet her!

Mable is an estimated 2 years old, weighs 20 pounds, and has limited use of her back legs. We have no idea how she became paralyzed, just that this little firecracker doesn’t let those weak back legs slow her down! She’s got perpetual bloody scabs on her back paws to prove it. Of course we’ve already got little protective booties on the way and she’s been fitted for a stylish new wheelchair! This resilient lady has done nothing but wag her tail, give kisses, and curl up for cuddles since her rescue and we are simply blown away by her awesome temperament despite her past.

We’re anxious to get her to our vet and set up a game plan to hopefully get those legs working again. But regardless of how that conversation goes, Mable deserves the right to a full, happy life and we are thrilled to be able to give that to her.

Update as of May:

Mable is now a certified gym girlie!

This big eared babe is fully healed from her spay which means we’re back at Veterinary Orthopaedic & Mobility Center to continue her physical therapy! It felt like walking around with a celebrity when we walked in after a few weeks away and everyone started cooing, calling her name, and coming up for hugs

Mable is now 100% mobile, a true miracle and blessing , so now we’re working to build her core strength as we focus on balance and stability. More often than not, especially when she’s excited, her back legs are flying all over the place (we call them her party legs) and struggle to keep up with the high speed moves of her front legs. Continuing to work on her coordination is key so that one day she can frolic to her hearts content without slipping, falling over, or worse, getting hurt again. She deserves to live life to the fullest and at full speed!

Stay tuned for more updates on this spirited little gal!

Update as of October 2023:

In case anyone’s been like “what the heck, where‘s Mable?”, that’s totally my bad (It’s Chelsea, hi) I’ve felt weird writing about my own household and family but that’s what Mable is - she’s family, and pretty much has been since the start. What better day to announce her adoption than the day she’s officially heartworm free!

When we got a call begging us to come meet a partially paralyzed dog with amazing spirit, we drove to meet her knowing that if we didn’t pull her that it would likely end with a guaranteed spot on the euthanasia list. But that if we took her, it meant she was coming into one of our personal homes because we were at max capacity with nowhere else to place her. I remember gasping and grabbing ahold of Tori’s arm as I made eye contact with a happy, wiggly, wobbly thing through an employees only barrier and knew she was coming home a new Swampie, and coming home with me (unbeknownst to my boyfriend ). Defying the odds and kicking butt at physical therapy, Mable got stronger every single day and made a remarkable recovery! The wheelchair and booties we’d purchased for her were sent back, and this wild creature has never looked back!

Within a six-month period, we had to say goodbye to two of our pack, leaving a gaping hole in our family. In comes this tenacious little girl with an incredible spirit, wild ears, crazy party legs, and that hole started to get smaller and more bearable. It quickly became obvious that she wasn’t going anywhere. She’s got a best friend in the shape of an owl that she uses, abuses, and literally carries everywhere (so much so that we have replacements on deck), a special relationship with her fluffy feline brother that she corn cobs instead of giving kisses, and lives to smother her humans with love She put our family back together and I am SO grateful every day that we made that last minute trip to the shelter.

All this to say that I adopted happiness, and so should you. <3
